To experiment and learn in the safe confines of love. Hopefully, Bella can face and move past her past, and embrace the remains of her teenage years as she should.
The revelation about the Cullen baby that died adds another layer to the Cullen family, but to Edward's character too. I have seen what parents who go catatonic after the loss of a child does to a surviving child. Edward is hurting emotionally too, not from the loss of the brother, but the loss of his parents.
